Get a LiveCD of your favorite Linux distribution.
Boot from the CD, to try it out.
When you have found your favorite Linux flavor, you can install the Linux operation system, right from the same LiveCD.
Or:
You could have a dual operation system Windows/Linux (called "dual booting"), and use whatever OS you feel like, at a time: either Windows, or Linux.
