New interpretation of Gösta Adrian-Nilsson's "I. Fussballspieler" („Katarinahissen II“): Cuxhaven Raid, from 1914, or similar? At least we can assume, that this is another war painting from the artist.

"Giant airships measuring 420 feet by 40 feet wide were used to great effect in reconnaissance flights over the North Sea and in bombing raids on Britain and France. These Zeppelins were made out of a frame of aluminium girders, filled with hydrogen gas bags and were powered by two motors."

What we see, on top of the painting, at first sight, is a airship with mooring mast (or searchlight tower). And the time of the scene, is night. And we also see the tilted backside and fins of another airship near the mast/tower, and going up in flames, and showing the bare construction frame of the airship, and illuminating the other airship, as well as the sailors (probably running for shelter) and the harbour with buildings below. We can see the flames in a triangle sector between mast/tower and the airship fins. Behind the sailor on the top, we can see white clowds(, and between the sailors, searchlights on the grounds). And left to the clowds, there are search lights, lighting form top to bottom. Remember, it is night. And also war. Behind of the mast or tower, there is also fire. Illuminating the other side of the harbour. When we look for airship accidents in 1915, we can find the following information:
Quote:
„3 September 1915: Imperial German Navy L 10 (Zeppelin LZ 40) destroyed by fire on 3 September 1915 after being struck by lightning near Cuxhaven.“

However: If you study the „List of Zeppelins“, you can immagine the faith of these two airships:

About Zeppelin L 10 (LZ40) it sais:
„Destroyed in a thunderstorm on 3 September 1915 near Cuxhaven killing 19 crew members.“
